Biography

ZIYA AZAZI was born in 1969 in Antioch, Turkey.

After finishing his studies as a mining engineer in Istanbul, he discovered the worlds of acrobatic gymnastics then dance. He began his first choreographic works at the Istanbul State Theatre. In 1994, he moved to Vienna and participated in numerous festivals, working with various companies. He obtained a European grant from ‘danceweb’ with the distinction of ‘Most Remarkable Dancer of the Year 1999’ for his solo performance in Unterwegs Tabula Rasa at the Sommertanzwochen dance festival in Vienna. Between 2000 and 2002, Ziya Azazi was engaged by the Vienna Opera, the Stuttgart Theaterhaus and the Grand Théâtre in Geneva. He has collaborated with internationally renowned artists such as Mercan Dede, Ismael Ivo and Jan Fabre.
For the past ten years, Ziya Azazi has been devoting himself to traditional Sufi dance and created several solo works, taking inspiration from this ritual dance, seeking a synthesis with contemporary western dance. His piece Dervish has met with great success the world over.
In collaboration with jazz trumpeter Serge Adam, at the 2007 ‘38e Rugissants’ festival in Grenoble, he premiered Icons, a piece exploring unusual, original forms and sounds. Ziya Azazi was recently guest artist, invited by the composer Zad Moultaka, in residence at the Royaumont Foundation, and participated in the first performance of Déplacé (2008) during the Royaumont musical season and revived in Antwerp, Creil and the Aix-en-Provence Festival in July 2009.
Ziya Azazi conducts numerous workshops, open to the public, in which he explores contemporary western dance and ritual Sufi dance.
It is always the same questionings that trouble Ziya Azazi. He chose Dervish dance as a language and travels round the world in order to find his truth, this hidden truth that is gradually revealing itself along the path of dance, in the tradition of the mystics of Anatolia, even though he infringes on that ancestral tradition.
Ziya Azazi’s body speaks a clear language: Man seeks the absolute, the truth, the meaning of existence, and to do so, must go through several emotional stages: fear, confusions, ignorance…
The path that Ziya Azazi has chosen is that of joy and repetition, of spinning to the point of ecstasy. His body becomes a medium for exploring the inner world in a profoundly human solitude.

La danse de Ziya Azazi déploie une énergie contagieuse et joyeuse. Elle s'inscrit dans un univers traversé par le mysticisme et la transe. Ce grand danseur contemporain découvre de nouvelles formes, transgresse les limites mentales et physiques de la tradition des derviches tourneurs et crée, par la danse, un lieu de progression de l'âme.

ZIYA AZAZI est né en 1969 à Antioche/Turquie. Après avoir fini ses études d'ingénieur de mine à Istanbul, il découvre d'abord le monde de la gymnastique acrobatique puis celui de la danse. Il commence ses premiers travaux chorégraphiques au Théâtre d'Etat d'Istanbul. En 1994 il s'installe à Vienne/Autriche et participe à de multiples festivals en travaillant avec différentes compagnies. Ziya Azazi a collaboré avec des artistes de renommée internationale comme Mercan Dede, Ismael Ivo ou Jan Fabre... Depuis dix ans il se consacre à la danse traditionnelle soufie et a créé plusieurs oeuvres en solo en s'inspirant de cette danse rituelle, comme Dervish in Progress ou ‘Azab recherchant une synthèse avec la danse contemporaine occidentale. Sa pièce Dervish, qui est une intégration de ces deux soli, connaît un très grand succès dans le monde entier. En collaboration avec le trompettiste jazz Serge Adam il a créé Icons (2007 au festival des 38e Rugissants/Grenoble) une pièce qui s'inscrit dans l'exploration des formes et sons inédites. Ziya Azazi était artiste invité par le compositeur Zad Moultaka, qui est en résidence pour trois ans à la Fondation Royaumont et a participé à la création de ‘Déplacé' en octobre 2008 dans le cadre de la saison musicale de Royaumont. Ziya Azazi sera en résidence au Festival Eclats chorégraphiques à la Rochelle en octobre 2009. Il anime de nombreux ateliers ouvert à tout public, où il explore la danse contemporaine occidentale et la danse rituelle soufi.

Ce sont toujours les mêmes questionnements dont semble se soucier Ziya Azazi. Il a choisi la danse comme langage pour découvrir son centre, se déplacer dans le monde afin de trouver sa vérité, la vérité cachée qui se dévoile peu à peu sur le chemin de la danse, en suivant la lignée des mystiques d'Anatolie, en dépassant les frontières de cette tradition ancestrale.

Le corps de Ziya Azazi parle un langage clair : l'homme cherche l'absolu, la vérité, le sens de l'être. Cependant il doit passer par plusieurs étapes comme la peur, les confusions, l'ignorance…Le chemin que Ziya Azazi a choisi est celui de la joie et de la répétition, du tournoiement jusqu'à l'extase. Son corps devient un médium pour déployer une magie, une pureté mais aussi une solitude profondément humaine. Comme le dit l'artiste lui-même :

« Je m'oublie et je deviens un miroir. Je me vide et je me nettoie. »
